Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction is a technique for hair transplant. This technique involves removing small grafts from the donor site which is commonly from the back of the head but can also be from the beard or body. The hair grafts are removed using a special hand held extractor device. The hair grafts can then be implanted into the recipient site. FUE can also be performed using the ARTAS robot.

This procedure is performed using local anaesthetic as a day case. This will involve injection of local anaesthesia to numb the areas where the grafts will be taken and placed. These areas will remain numb for several hours afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

FUT is the traditional strip method for hair transplants. This involves removing a strip of hair from the back of the head. In FUE, small hair grafts measuring from 0.6-0.9 mm are taken using circular punches. The FUT procedure will leave a linear scar where the hair strip has been removed. With FUE, the scars will leave small round marks at the donor site. FUE will not require any stitching unlike the FUT. These will normally heal within about a week or two. The donor site for FUE is usually larger than the FUT technique. This will require shaving a larger area initially. The follicular unit extraction technique can be used to harvest grafts from different parts of the body such as the chest, beard or back.

You will immediately see the new hairline and implanted hair grafts. The hair will gradually fall out and regrow. The new hair will regrow over the next 12 months following the procedure.
