Do you know who is performing your hair transplant?

By | News | No Comments

Having a hair transplant is a big decision to make and it can be stressful and difficult to find the right procedure and surgeon. It is very important that you do your research about your doctor and clinic. There are a number of clinics offering hair transplants that are not performed by doctors. It is essential you check what qualifications they have and here are some useful tips to help you find a qualified doctor to perform your hair transplant.

Is your hair transplant surgeon a doctor?

This may seem like a ridiculous question to ask but it is probably the most important one. It is surprising that people that are not medically trained or doctors are performing hair transplants. All doctors in the UK will have to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). You can check if a doctor is registered by using the GMC register online. All of our hair transplant surgeons are fully registered with the GMC with licenses to practice.

Is your hair transplant surgeon a surgeon?

Hair transplant doctors come from all backgrounds with some being General Practitioners and others surgeons. It is good to know the background of your doctor and their experience. The GMC register will have a list of all licensed doctors in the UK. They also have a specialist register which contains the names of specialists in particular fields. For example, a plastic surgeon that is fully accredited in the UK should be on the GMC specialist register in plastic surgery. When you search online for an individual doctor it will also show you if they are on the specialist register.

What training has your hair transplant surgeon had?

You should ask your hair transplant surgeon about their experience. It is important to know what training they have received in the treatments they provide. This can include specialist training such as advanced fellowships in areas such as hair transplants.

Are they a member of a national association?

There are many associations out there and it can be difficult to know which ones are respected authorities. For plastic surgery the two main associations in the UK are the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). The main hair transplant body is the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons (BAHRS). There are also well known international associations such as the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) and International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS).
